Ive decided to write this post for many reasons but I would like to first say, it is your choice how you feed your baby. As long as mum and baby are happy and healthy that is all that matters!
Breastfeeding should be the most natural thing to do for our baby but sometimes it can be a stressful and frustrating time. It’s common for mums to experience pain and discomfort and feel disheartened that they aren’t getting it right for their baby.
I have breastfed both my children. Dude was pretty straight forward. He got it from day one and thrived from there till 13 months. Bear however, I had lots of problems. With a lot of great support from midwives, peer supporters and friends I finally got there and our breastfeeding journey continues to this day.
These are my top 5 tips for breastfeeding:
1. Experiment with different positions – I wasn’t aware of how useful this could be. It can be a particularly useful of your nipples are sore and you need baby to suckle from a different angle.

2. Access the help that’s out there as soon as possible.
There are lots of support groups, peer workers and agencies that can advise and support.
- Health visitor
- Local peer supporter worker or group
- La leche league
- NCT dedicated breastfeeding phone line
3. Be led by baby
2-3 hourly feeds are something of the past. Baby led feeding is hugely promoted now and is a benefit to both mum and baby. It will help regulate your supply whilst your body works out how much milk it needs to produce. It can prevent mastitis and engorgement aswell which are both very uncomfortable!
However, If baby appears sleepy and sleeps through its feeds then gently wake them and put them to the breast. Engorgement can be unpleasant, if baby doesn’t feed then you may need to express.
